Embrace Your Inner Child
“The most sophisticated people I know - inside they are all children. ”

I seemed to have lost touch with my inner child this winter without realizing it. I know how important it is for my creativity, but sometimes the gloom and doom of winter can take over. There was a cold going around, but it never hit me full force, more of a lingering on-again, off-again type.
I was in a funk that I couldn’t pull myself out of, which led to more stress. Stress can be dangerous and inevitable in our lives from time to time. Learning how to deal with it is key. The best way I know is to get in touch with my inner child. It’s easy to get caught up in life's stresses, and most of us are urged to fix things, even things we have no control over. I don’t know about you, but for me I feel guilty if I walk away from the stress of thinking I need to work harder, in order to fix things. There is only so much we can do in our life, and often the best way for things we have no control over is to walk away and go do something fun that brings out our inner child. For me, that is playing with my horse.

My obsession with horses started when I was a little girl. My Uncle L.L. had Arabian horses. He lives in Yadkinville, and my parents would drive us to Yadkinville every other Sunday to see my mother’s parents, my Grandparents, and my uncle, her brother, who lived down the road from them. I would pester my uncle all day until he would take me to see his horses after we ate lunch. The obsession began. Years later, when I was sixteen and had my first job as a cashier at Food Town, now called Food Lion, I traded a pony I had for his Arabian mare. He brought the Arabian here to Greensboro and took my pony in return. I paid for her food and vet bills with my money. This began many years of my horse ventures.
I also enjoy spending time with my dogs on a hike, and I find that very healing as well, for just being outdoors and in the woods is natural for me. As a child, I used to play in the woods behind my house, for there was a creek down there. I took my Barbies and my plastic horses and let my Barbies ride in the woods. This was before I ever owned a horse. Anything to do with horses was my idea of fun. Today, being around my horses especially brings out my inner child.

Whatever it is that brings out your inner child, make sure you steal away to do it. We have no control over most things that stress us, so we must let go of the guilt of having fun and stealing away and have fun. It is the fun that ultimately fixes the stress. I always find that fun improves my mindset and rejuvenates my soul and spirit. That in itself improves my health.
Stay Younger Through Play
Life today can get complicated. If you want to remain young at hears you've got to relieve the stress. The problem with the internet today and social media is that spiritual vampires are prevalent. They will suck the life out of you, if you let them. People post what they want us to see and believe, even when it’s not the truth or the real picture. It is a problem with children today, and especially teenagers. They see posts of classmates and feel left out or isolated. There is also bullying on social media. I am forever grateful we did not have social media as a teenager. I feel very blessed for the years I grew up. Better creative times I think for young people. We had to be more creative and were outdoors a lot.
"We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing." George Bernard Shaw
When you find yourself stressed during these times, remember what you see on social media isn’t real. Get away from it, go do something real, out in the real world, and be a kid again. Social media could not be more fake, and people become obsessed with getting attention, even when it is not real. We see people post their every movement in life, and they work hard to paint a perfect picture. Remember, the picture they are painting is for you and you only, and just like the news it isn’t the whole picture. Find the humor in it and allow yourself to live in the real world, but most importantly, connect with your inner child as much as possible.
Besides my horses, one of my favorite things is spending time with my boyfriend and his granddaughter, Presley. I enjoy how I feel when I am with her and him. She is creative and we have fun in my studio. The other time I enjoy with kids is teaching horseback riding lessons to Vivian and Desmond, and I love all three of these children dearly. They all bring me great joy. My time with all of them brings me back in touch with my child side.

“Creativity doesn’t wait for that perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones.” —Bruce Garrabrandt (Author | Artist)
Relieve yourself of guilt when you need to pull away and play. You will never accomplish much living in stress all of the time, so steal away and walk with your inner child. Hard work on our dreams is crucial to success, however playtime is as well. A stressed mind loses it's creativity and needs rejuvenation. Playtime allows us to reconnect with our creative side allowing us to create effulgent masterpieces of work!
